Gartnerkofel 2195 m via the west ridge, Carnic Alps

Demanding and, compared to the normal route, lonely crossing of the Gartnerkofel with alpine views on the ridge and some climbing sections up to grade II on the west ridge. Before that we visit the almost two-thousander Klammleiten, from where we have a good view of our planned tour.

HIKE UP: Behind the Watschingeralm on the hiking trail towards Kühweger and past the junction of the normal route. At the Kühweger Törl (1914 m), turn left along the geotrail to the Kammleiten with summit cross and beautiful views and back to the Törl.
A few metres further along the sandy ridge edge, then the Westgratsteig is clearly recognisable and also partially marked in red. In a steep mountain pine alley along the northern slopes to the right around the first "western Gendarme" at 2030 metres. Continue up to a traverse from about 2100 to 2110 metres. Climb up a somewhat exposed ridge cone, beyond which descend a few metres southwards to a small notch with a wall book. We soon reach the south summit with a tiny summit cross at 2185 m and a beautiful view of the nearby main summit, where climbers on the normal route are usually already resting. Descend eastwards to the saddle and quickly and easily along the normal route to the Gartnerkofel north or main summit at 2195 m with its large metal cross. 685 metres in altitude and 1 1/2 hours fast

DESCENT: Down the normal route via the saddle to 2080 m. Without a path or on path tracks left uphill to the ridge and left on this to the east summit 2185 m with a great view of the east faces of the Gartnerkofel. Back to the normal route, at 1975 m keep right towards Kühweger Törl and in a traverse on the south side to the junction at 1870 m before Törl. Now turn left down to the lake at the managed Watschiger Alm at 1638 m. 75 metres of ascent and a good 3/4 hours.

Total: 760 metres of ascent and 2 1/4 hours walking time
