Hiking in the universe of the alpine cheese dairies
The famous Carnic High Route (KHW 403) runs right through the Carnic Milky Way. While the western section of the Carnic High Route (from Sillian to the Wolayerseehütte) is highly popular with experienced mountain hikers and often leads along challenging trails through high alpine terrain, its eastern section (from the Wolayerseehütte to Thörl Maglern) reveals the wonderful world of alpine cheese dairies protected by rugged peaks on mostly gentle trails.
This part of the Carnic High Route between the Wolayerseehütte and Feistritzer Alm has been linked with the constellation hikes and their stories – thus the Carnic High Route can be experienced in a new way. The fantastic result of this is the Carnic Milky Way long-distance hiking trail: totalling six stages, you can enjoy the wonderful world of rugged peaks and sheltered alpine cheese diaries as described above on the best trails of the Carnic High Route and the constellation hikes.
We have made no compromises for the sake of experience: We have reversed the walking direction (from east to west to the wonderfully situated Wolayersee Hütte as a worthy finishing point), because this suits the dramatic composition of the landscape more, and we have established an official "The Carnic Milky Way" information and booking centre. In this way, the famous long-distance hiking trail turns into a scenic, intellectual, and culinary delight: the Carnic Milky Way - hiking in the universe of alpine cheese dairies!
