Spitzegel (2118 m)

This tour is a real challenge in terms of fitness and technique, on the one hand because of the great difference in altitude between the valley and the summit, on the other hand the last part of the ascent is a climb in the 1st degree of difficulty, therefore only recommended for sure-footed mountaineers with a head for heights. This also applies to the onward route to the Vellacher Egel. The unique view, as if from an aeroplane, is worth it.
Suggestion
The view from the Spitzegel and the Vellacher Egel is unique, very interesting rock stratification.
Equipment
Normal hiking equipment with good hiking boots.
Directions
From Villach:
From the A2 south motorway, take the Hermagor exit and continue on the B111 to Obervellach. Turn right at Obervellach and drive north through the village.

From Hermagor:
Take the B111 towards Villach, in Obervellach (after approx. 2 km) turn left at the turning lane and cross the village to the north.

Directions

From Obervellach near Hermagor, we hike along the Vellacher Bach stream towards Radnig on an asphalt road. After approx. 200 metres past the last house, path no. 248 branches off to the right, which we follow to the Obervellacher Alm/Laudinzenhaus. It is a long forest path ahead of us, which also crosses gravel paths. After around 1 ½ hours, we arrive at the Obervellacher Stand, where cows used to be grazed before they were taken to the mountain pasture. The gravel path leads over a ditch with striking rocky outcrops above us and then branches off to the right and heads steeply northwards. After an hour we come to a spring with a trough that is not constantly flowing and then we reach a clearing with a hunting lodge, here you have a beautiful view, rest area 1530 m. The Laudinzenhütte, 1676 m, which is open in summer, invites us to take a short break before we reach the summit via path 229 in 1 1/4 hours and a short climb. As a reward, we enjoy a fantastic view as if from an aeroplane.

Variants for the way back:

1st variant: (This variant is marked on the map!)Return as for the ascent, approx. 3 - 4 hours.

2nd variant: Via path 229 along the ridge, partly exposed in 2 hours to the Vellacher Egel - 2108 m - and from there in 3 - 4 hours down into the valley to Khünburg is a strenuous option for very good mountaineers. At Vellacher Egel, Lake Pressegg lies right at our feet and the path leads partly through mountain pines to the Vellacher Sattel and through steep grassy slopes down into the valley, where you can watch the chamois grazing in quiet times. After the memorial to the hunter Eberhard Butter, who died in an accident, we cross a wide scree slope before the forest picks us up and marker no. 249 leads us over the Untervellacher Stand, 1474 m, to the Zankl Grotto. From there past the Mother of God rock to Khünburg. From Khünburg we return to the starting point via paths 12 and 13. The descent from Vellacher Egel takes about 3 ½ to 4 hours.
